The Strange Case Of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger

Laugh out loud fun! I just had to read this one just because of the title. A young boy called Dwight is a bit clueless but he makes origami really well. One day he makes an origami puppet which gives out advice. Actually he can predict the future and the best way to deal with tricky situations. His advice actually works and soon his classmates are lining up with questions. How hilarious, actually talking to a paper finger puppet. How can Dwight be so clueless yet so smart? Everyone knows it is Dwight talking and not the Yoda. Really really great fun and even instructions on folding your own Yoda.

David Walliams’ BILLIONAIRE BOY

David Walliams of Little Britain fame can also write funny children’s books. He always has a message but tells the story with humour that children like. In this novel the boy’s father has made heaps of money from inventing a new toilet roll. The boy has everything except friends. How does he buy them, he buys everything else? Well you will have to read it to find out but purple bottoms is a clue.

Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee’s BINK AND GOLLIE

What a team Kate DiCamillo and Tony Fucile and Alison McGhee. Brilliant for those first readers. Short stories, vibrant illustrations and fun. Bink and Gollie are the best of friends but only agree on wearing roller skates and nothing else! So, guess what? They have to compromise.

Jacqueline Harvey’s ALICE-MIRANDA ON HOLIDAYS

The first Alice Miranda book was so very good and so is this one. Alice-Miranda-Highton-Smith-Kennington-Jones is on holiday from her school for young ladies. Of course the holidays are full of cranky boys and a movie star. What else can we expect of Alice Miranda? She takes it all in her stride with her wonderful manners and optimistic attitude to life.

Jane Simmons’ BERYL GOES WILD and SHIP’S CAT DORIS

Beryl, a rather adventurous, is off to the abattoir and she is not well pleased. You can follow her on her exciting adventures (as she escapes certain death) and the mischief she finds herself in along the way.

In the second book in what appears to be a series Doris the Cat, such a sweet little kitten grows up aboard a small boat. She has to contend with dogs, chickens, rats and water. She learns a lot as she reels from one adventure to another.
