John Boyne’s NOAH BARLEYWATER RUNS AWAY
John Boyne wrote the Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas, so he knows how to write about intense subjects with gentleness. I cannot begin to do justice to this book but I will try. A young boy runs away from home, but why? He is happy, he loves his parents. He can’t run very fast and he is small for his age but these aren’t reasons to run away! He meets some interesting characters and ends up in a wooden toy shop owned by a very old man. Who incidentally could run very, very fast when he was young. The old man helps Noah understand what he is running away from and how to confront the immense sadness the boy is trying to hide. Don’t just let your children read this one! Another to savour together.
